Curtains for Outside, 2020

Dye sublimation prints on polyester shower curtains
Dimensions variable

Location and Context: In April 2020, about one month after a lockdown was declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vanessa Albury asked me to install this work as the first piece in her new public art gallery, Between the Windows, outside her apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Concept: This is an installation of colorful, patterned, translucent shower curtains printed with layered photographs of previous sculptures. The curtains look different depending on whether you are looking in or out, dancing vigorously in the wind, or hanging still - their movements are undefined by desire or thought.

Activity

Sculpture / Writing Exercise:

1. Using up to 5 objects you find in your surroundings, create a temporary sculpture in a public space.

2. Try 3 configurations of the same objects, leaving the sculpture for at least 5 minutes. 3. Write what each of them meant to you, and your experience displaying the pieces.

4. Explain how you imagine other people would perceive them, focusing on how the objects relate to each other and how the sculpture relates to the environment around it.

5. Take photos of the sculptures that show how they relate to the space around them.
