Process: Small Flag, is a small embroidery from the same series as Work 10. I photographed it and had that image woven in a larger size so I could embroider on top the reproduction. I imagined this new piece to be a map of the cloud world I was developing.
Concept: I used photography to transform one object into another. I layered physical actions like sewing and embroidery to add layers of color, line, and shape, further changing the original image allowing it to grow over time. The finished piece evokes many things, from a microscopic world, to a map of an imaginary landscape where my stories can take place.
Activity
Drawing Exercise: Supplies: drawing tools and paper
1. Draw a map of a recent trip you took without using text - Try to make it legible so that someone could understand the basics of this journey.
2. To test this, share it with a friend and see if they can guess.
3. If you don’t want to draw, carefully describe the movements you made with your body without explaining what you were interacting with specifically.
4. See what a listener can understand from your fragmented description.
