Bomb Jacket, 2019

Digitally woven cotton, thread
45 x 50 x 2 in.

Concept: My artwork exists on a continuum between art and functional objects, as craft-related work often can. This is wearable art in the sense that, as a garment, it might make the wearer feel as if they are in an imagined world, or even transformed into a being from another unknown place.

Process: Each jacket uses one blanket with a pattern I designed. A friend and I created a muslin pattern which I use to cut out the pieces. Then I serge with a sewing machine to seal the edges, and pin and sew the jacket. It takes about 2 hours for each one and I sell them online, at design markets, and to friends who visit the studio.

Writing / Discussion Questions:

1. Is this piece Art?  Why or why not?

2. How can one bring an artistic sensibility to their daily life?

3. Why would one want to? Why not?

4. Take a photo of something you are wearing - invent a story about it and write a paragraph about your fabricated meaning.
